Max’s Wine Dive opened a few weeks ago downtown - 2nd and San Jacinto-ish. Across from Rio Grande (the old Real World house.)
Co-worker and I decided to check it out for a pre-run Happy Hour…
Pros:
- The food was really good comfort food. We had the Gator Bites, Nacho Mama’s Oysters, the fries and the Max and Cheese. Co-worker said it was the best mac and cheese she’s ever had.
- Great vibe. The wait staff wears jeans and t-shirts and there’s a juke box.
- It’s downtown and open late, so the next time you’re starvin’ like marvin at midnight on a Friday, skip the pizza and head here for real food.
- I’m guessing the wine selection is good. I’m not really what one would call a connoisseur of the wines.
- The chef and co-worker had a three-minute conversation about a dessert called the Brown Betty. Had we not been going to work out post-binge, we’d have taken him up for his offer of a free Betty.
Cons:
- All it is is comfort food. Lots of heavy fried stuff. I’ll probably enjoy it more come winter, when I’m not planning on being in a bikini soon.
- The staff was a little too attentive. Like, hovering to take our plate as soon as we were done eating. I’m sure they’re just doing that because they’re new, though.
- Not open for lunch.
So, if you’re in the downtown area and wanting to try something a little different….something not Tex-Mex, I do recommend it. It seems like a great place to take family when they’re in town. Oh, and I definitely do not recommend going for a five mile run after you visit Max’s….
Your next visit should involve the Kobe beef burger.
